Profile: I’ve always been passionate about animal behaviour and from a young age, I knew that I wanted to work with animals. When it was time to choose a course for university, the option was obvious. I studied BSc in Zoology at the University of Otago (2015). While studying close to the sea, I spent a lot of time watching seabirds dive for their food, dolphins surf the waves, and even harvesting New Zealand clams from the local beach for my seafood Tom Yam Soup. Upon graduation, I got lucky and landed myself a job as a Marine Biologist. Getting paid to work very closely with the Giant Clams and watch them soak up the sun is a dream come true! I hope to have a better understanding of them in order to help giant clams and all reef animals deal with ongoing climate change.

Current project:

  • 2017 – present: Molecular biology of inorganic carbon absorption, transport and assimilation in the fluted giant clams
