《狮城有约》(Hello Singapore) is a news/current affairs programme produced by Channel 8, which airs daily in Singapore. A short segment will also be dedicated to the topic of the day that varies from Monday to Friday. The St John’s Island Marine Laboratory was featured on the show’s Friday topic《发现小红点》(Discovering the Red Dot) on 21 August 2015. The main feature showed the research work carried out by various staff members, and a toggle special (available only online) showed our staff sharing interesting tidbits about working on the island.
You can catch our interviews online as follows:
《狮城有约》节目重温 8月21日 － Scroll between 34:20 to 40:22 for our island feature.
《发现小红点》在圣约翰岛上工作不能怕蛇 － Translation: You can’t be afraid of snakes when working on the island.
I had the opportunity to share our giant clam research work on the feature, but was stumped by having to use Mandarin to explain our work on the hatchery! Thankfully, I’ve been doing literature reviews for the past year and found it useful to have Chinese references as a guide. My interview slot is between 38:00 to 39:07. 🙂 [NB: Pardon the Singlish-ness of my Mandarin in this interview!]
My fellow colleagues (yes including the cats!) were also interviewed to share various aspects of our research on the St John’s Island Marine Laboratory. 🙂
So now you know how to say some of our marine animals’ names in Mandarin! 😀
